Many of the cat food and dog food on the market now are pellet food formed by high-temperature extrusion and puffing. Puffed pet food has a fluffy texture and good palatability, and is also a common staple food type for pets.
But many people don't know that when puffed and just formed particles look dry, there is actually hidden moisture inside.
The puffing process creates a loose and porous structure inside the particles, which easily locks in latent moisture. If only the surface is dried, it is easy for the outer layer to dry completely while the core remains damp.
This is also the real reason why many pet food stores become damp, soft, moldy, and greasy. Particles that are dry on the outside and wet on the inside are not visible to the naked eye, but after being stored in bags, the internal moisture slowly seeps back, which can easily breed bacteria and mold, greatly shortening the shelf life and posing a risk to pet health.
The traditional hot air drying method for heat transfer requires slow drying from the outside to the inside, which takes a long time, makes it difficult for the moisture in the core to dry completely, and has low mass production efficiency. So now many legitimate pet food factories use microwave drying and sterilization processes after extrusion and puffing.
The biggest feature of microwave is that it does not require a heat transfer process or slow drying, and can directly penetrate the inside of puffed particles, synchronously dehydrating and drying from the inside out.
