High fat nuts such as walnut kernels and cashew kernels are prone to harboring insect eggs during harvesting, drying, and storage. The eggs often hide in the folds and gaps of the nuts, and it is difficult to deal with disinfection and sterilization on the ordinary surface. When the conditions are suitable, the eggs hatch, causing the whole batch of nuts to be scrapped. Microwave insecticidal eggs rely on the physical insecticidal technology of electromagnetic waves penetrating materials and synergistic effects of thermal and non thermal biological effects.
Many people may simply understand it as "heating to kill insects", but it has a fundamental difference from traditional heating. Traditional heating conducts heat from the outside to the inside, often resulting in high surface temperatures but insufficient lethal conditions for insect eggs inside the kernels, leaving blind spots for pest control.
Primary function: Microwave thermal effect, directly heating up from the inside to inactivate insect eggs
Microwaves belong to high-frequency electromagnetic waves and have good penetration ability. They can directly penetrate into the interior of nuts and act on polar molecules such as water molecules inside the insect eggs. Water molecules follow the alternating electric field to rotate at high speed and rub against each other, directly generating heat inside the insect eggs. In a short period of time, it can reach the lethal temperature of the insect eggs, causing the proteins inside the eggs to denature and lose their hatching ability.
This "body heating" feature can directly act on the insect eggs hidden deep inside the nut without the need to bake the entire nut at high temperatures for a long time, reducing the problems of nut burning, flavor deterioration, and nutrient damage caused by prolonged high temperatures.
Second effect: Non thermal biological effect, electric field directly interferes with the life activities of insect eggs
Relying solely on heating is not the entirety of microwave insecticide. Alternating microwave electric field can directly change the membrane potential of insect eggs, disrupt membrane permeability, interfere with normal cell metabolism, and inhibit enzyme activity. Even if some insect eggs are not directly inactivated by high temperatures, the physiological functions of cells will still be disrupted and unable to develop normally.
Microwave insecticidal eggs belong to pure physical treatment, do not require the addition of chemical agents, are green and residue free, and have fast processing speed and controllable temperature. While killing the eggs, they can also preserve the original aroma and nutrition of walnut and cashew kernels, making them a commonly used method for preventing and controlling insect eggs in nut processing.
